Fescue Lawn Turf Grass Information

Geographic Zones: Fescue grass grows best in colder climates. For the most part, it will survive well in the majority of central and northern states. Only the southern states, where the average temperatures are high, does fescue have difficulty growing.

Water Requirements: This grass has very low water requirements and should be watered only when the soil is dry or the grass shows signs of needing water. Watering too often will make the grass more prone to diseases and pests.

Fertilizer Requirements: Fertilization requirements vary for each variety of this type of grass, but are all generally low. It is important to keep in mind, however, that for all varieties, it is best to avoid fertilizing much in hotter months to cut down on disease and insect infestation.

When to Plant: While this type of grass can be planted in the fall and spring, early fall is considered to be the best time. In fact, the absolute best time to plant is generally thought to occur between September 15 through November 1.

Recommended Mowing Height: Mowing height is largely determined by the variety of grass planted and the climate of the area. This can range from 1 - 3 inches in height.

Light Requirements: Just like its water requirements, the light requirements for this grass is fairly low, leading this to be one of the most shade-tolerant of the cool season grasses.

Best Places to Use: This grass does well in low-light, high-traffic situations, which makes it perfect for many different purposes, ranging from personal lawns to playgrounds and sports fields.

Common Diseases: Overall, fescue is fairly tolerant to most diseases that affect grass. It is, however, particularly susceptible to fusarium blight when it is young and, in older lawns, leaf spot and brownpatch can cause difficulties.

Common Pests: These include armyworms, cutworms, and white grubs. White grubs are a particular threat to watch for. If 3 or more are found to exist in the lawn per square foot, then action should be taken to prevent damage as soon as possible.

Soil pH: Recommended pH levels for this grass is from 5.5-7.5

Special Advantages:

  • Tolerates low-light and heavy-traffic areas.
  • Drought resistant.
  • Needs very little maintenance to survive.
  • Fairly resistant to most diseases.
  • Special Problems:

  • Does not handle high heat situations well.
  • Requires a greater mow height than many other grasses to thrive.
